Any decision to eradicate the bee-killing varroa mite from the Nelson region could take weeks to implement while up to au$12 m (us$ 9M ) in funding is secured from the Cabinet. Technical recommendations on eradication options of the mite are likely to go to Agriculture Minister Jim Anderton early next week. However, it is understood the usual process to gain funding from the Cabinet can take up to six weeks.

IN SPAIN CONSORTIUM TO EXPORT HONEY
The Cooperative Sierras Andalusas SCA, of Castilblanco de los Arroyos - Seville, along with other two cooperatives of the apicultural sector, Apihurdes (Pinofranqueado - Cáceres) and Reina Kilama (of San Miguel Valero - Salamanca), will constitute the export partnership “Honey of the Mountain ranges of Spain” for the commercialization of honey and polen packagings, with the purpose directly of putting within reach of the consumer the honey and they polen that they produce. This partnership of export will be the company of greater production of honey and polen in Europe.

USDA ORGANIC SEAL
As sales of organic goods continue to rise, food and beverage manufacturers are increasingly turning to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Organic seal as a mark of approval, according to the nation’s Organic Trade Association (OTA). According to the latest figures, the overall food organic market has grown 28 percent since 2003 to reach a total value of US$14.000 in 2005, and is expected to reach US$16.000M by the end of 2006.

Up to 4 million honeybees could be killed if biosecurity officials decide to attempt a world-first eradication of the varroa bee mite. While no decision has yet been made on whether eradication is possible at Nelson, where the mite was discovered last month, methods for killing the bees include gassing or blocking up hives and killing them with petrol fumes.

Youths in Ra have been encouraged to delve into honey production to cater for the increasing local demand. 'The Ministry of Agriculture says that potential demand for beehives is 50,000 and we only have 7000 on the ground, and so we are 43000 short,' he said.
