IN JAMAICA A NEW PROCESSING PLANT TO REFINE AND PACKAGE HONEY AT INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

IN NEW ZEALAND GOVERMENT ASSIGN MORE FUNDS TO FIGHT AGAINST VARROA MITE
Biosecurity Minister Jim Anderton said today that Cabinet had decided to allocate an additional NZ$1.25 M ( US$ 0.79 M) to the management of varroa in the South Island. 'This funding is to allow Biosecurity New Zealand to work closely with beekeepers on a programme to reduce varroa levels in Nelson,'' he said.

Our hot weather and extended drought are hitting Texas agriculture hard--especially the state’s beekeeping industry. North Texas hive owners could lose more than 50% of their production this year. With few naturally flowering plants left to pollinate, some hives are not producing enough honey even to sustain their own bees.

USDA AWARDS GRANTS FOR AGRICULTURAL MARKETING PROJECTS
Agriculture Deputy Secretary Chuck Conner announced 27 matching grants totaling $1,333,530 that support agricultural market research and demonstration projects are being awarded to 25 states. 'These grants will be used to explore new and innovative approaches to marketing U.S. food and agricultural products and to improve the efficiency and performance of our marketing system,' said Conner.
