The fire of Quiroga will have probably an important impact in the beekeeping, an economic activity that in the last years was receiving more and more weight in the zone. The municipal government has certainty with which enough beehives have burned, but an inventory of the losses has still not been made in this sector.

ITALY 30% DROP IN HONEY PRODUCTION
Italian beekeepers sounded the alarm on Tuesday over a plunge in honey production, saying bizarre weather patterns (rain followed by drought) had caused a 30% drop in the amount of honey produced this year . The National Union of Italian Beekeepers (UNAAPI) blamed severe springtime storms followed by drought-like conditions in June and July .

IN GREECE THE FIRE DESTROYED BEEKEEPING FARMS
The devastating recent fire in Cassandra, in the northern area of Halkidiki, has also destroyed thousands of beehives, hurting Greece’s honey industry. Sources in the industry, say the forest that held the 7,000 beehives destroyed by the fire needs at least a decade to recover.

IN MALAYSIA 80% OF TESTED HONEY WERE FAKE
A recent study by a Universiti Malaya team found that about 80 per cent of the Malaysian honey in the market is either adulterated or synthetic. Led by Prof Dr Kamaruddin Mohd Yusoff of the Faculty of Medicine, the team collected hundreds of bottles from wet and night markets, medicine shops and supermarkets around the country. Dr Kamaruddin, who has been researching honey for the past 20 years, said of 40 samples taken for the final study, only nine were pure honey.

SUPPORT FOR BEEKEEPING IN FIJI ISLANDS
More technical support is being directed to bee keeping research and training to help the industry produce 250 tonnes of honey this year. The target, which is 50 tonnes more than what was produced last year, is still 50 tonnes short of satisfying the local demand, according to the Agriculture Ministry.

BEEKEEPING COURSE IN AFGHANISTAN
More than 4.6 million Afghans have returned home since UNHCR started assisting repatriation in 2002, mostly from neighbouring Pakistan and Iran. The six-month beekeeping course by the Society for Afghan Development and Assistance Technology is one of the income-generating activities funded by the UN refugee agency to help returnees settle back in their place of origin after years in exile.

IN AUSTRALIA A FIRE DESTROYED 3,000 BEEHIVES
Beekeepers in the Ararat region have been given a little hope after the devastation of the Grampians bushfire. Around 700 boxes, 4000 frames, 100 queen bees and various other pieces of equipment arrived in Ararat to be donated to local bee keepers. Senior apiary inspector for the Department of Primary Industries, Peter Kaczynski said that 22 commercial, semi-commercial and hobby beekeepers lost 3000 beehives in the fires.
