USA- BEE´S SURVIVAL RATE HIGHER THIS WINTER
Honey bees are as essential to the nation's crops as rain and sun, but a mysterious disease and a cold snap last winter killed off 72 percent of Ohio's bee population. Beekeepers such as Cheryl Wachsmuth hope their hives do much better this year. Although it's still early, things do look better, experts say.

USA- MORE MONEY TO APICULTURAL INVESTIGATION
The ?honey-do? list at UC Davis? newly revitalized Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility is now shorter, thanks to a $100,000 research donation from ice cream maker Haagen-Dazs to address the recent decline in the bee population. The funds will aid research into sustainable pollination and a devastating phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder, and will support a postdoctoral researcher, said Walter Leal, professor and chair of the UC Davis Department of Entomology.

USA- REAL MAP OF THE STATE OF BEES IN THE COUNTRY
In her effort to shed light on the health of native pollinating bees, Associate Professor of Biology Gretchen LeBuhn is soliciting the help of thousands of 'citizen scientists' nationwide. The 'Great Sunflower Project,' the first coast-to-coast study of bee pollination, will store and analyze the data at San Francisco State University. 'Our project is going to use data collected by the general public to produce the first real map of the state of bees in the continental United States,'

USA- PROHIBITED AFRICANIZED BEES IN FLORIDA
Africanized honey bees will be outlaws in Martin County in about 30 days. The ordinance authorizes county officials to obtain a warrant to remove the bees and their hives from private property. It also authorizes county officials to charge property owners for removal and court costs.

JAPAN- BEEKEEPING IN BIG CITIES
Beekeeping is no longer limited to rural areas, as city centers and residential areas are becoming hives of activity. And surprisingly, it seems bees are adapting well to the 'penthouse' lifestyle atop tall buildings. For instance, a shopping mall in Tokyo bought some beehives for this spring as part of a development effort in the area. Two years ago, in Tokyo's Ginza district, a volunteer group, the Tokyo Mitsubachi (honey bee) project, set up a rooftop apiary with about 20,000 Japanese as well as Western bees near one of the main avenues in the well-known shopping area.
