NEW ZELAND- SALES DROP AFTER HONEY INTOXICATION
More than 23 people were struck down after eating honey contaminated by bees feeding off native tutu bushes in the Coromandel, 22 cases of which had been traced to Whangamata's Projen Apiary, run by hobbyist Kevin Prout. The poisoning is being investigated by the Food Safety Authority. 'I'm concerned that the public's perception now is that there's a risk of honey generally, and comb honey specifically being contaminated with tutin toxin,' Mr Chris Cable, of Rainbow Honey said.

CANADA- EASES RESTRICTIONS ON BEE IMPORTS TO PROTECT BLUEBERRY CROP
Until now, the import of bees was tightly restricted to protect local hives from diseases such as honey bee tracheal mites. Bees could only be imported from New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and Nova Scotia. Under the new rules, bees can be imported through a program called Capped Queen Bee Cells. The queen bees have to come from a recognized breeding program and be declared disease-free. 'Blueberry growers need bees in order to ensure maximum pollination and fruit sets, to get the best yield they possibly can from their crop,' Chris Jordan, P.E.I.'s berry crop development officer

USA- MORE THAN 40 YEARS IN THE APICULTURAL INDUSTRY
Carol Hiatt thought she and her husband, Sidney, were a bit crazy 40 years ago when they left steady paying jobs as school teachers in Oregon and became beekeepers in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Carol, 70, still isn't fond of bees. They can sting, you know! But the 1,000-hive business they bought on Ephrata's B Street in 1968 now has 10,000 to 12,000 hives, making it one of the largest agricultural bee pollination services in the state.

USA- SURVEY: BEEKEEPERS LOST 35% OF BEES THIS WINTER
There was a Senate Briefing last week. The purpose was to explore why the $20 million from Agriculture Appropriations requested months ago by the Senators has not yet been found and to discover what new developments have come about in the ongoing research on Colony Collapse Disorder since the last hearing several months ago. On the research front not much has happened it seems. This is because most research projects are at a standstill due to lack of funding, or, as in the case of the 5-year USDA plan are just getting underway and haven?t produced results yet.
