USA- INCEASES THE INTEREST IN BEEKEEPING IN MASSACHUSETTS
Across Massachusetts and beyond, interest in beekeeping is exploding. Plymouth County's bee school had 40 students this spring, up from about two dozen two years ago. Worcester County, home of the nation's oldest county beekeepers' association, attracted 200 to its most recent course, almost double its 2005 enrollment. Essex County turned away some 40 aspiring beekeepers this year and taught another 93, a dramatic increase in interest over 2007, when 90 students enrolled, and well above the 60 or 70 typical before that.

USA- APICULTURAL COURSE IN PENNSYLVANIA
The Capital Area Beekeepers Association will be conducting its 21st annual short course in beekeeping and is geared toward the beginner beekeeper. Part one will take place May 3 at 8 a.m. in the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Center, north of Dauphin on Route 225. The second part will take place May 10 at noon at the Milton Hershey Farm Environmental Center in Hershey. Registration cost is $30, which includes a one-year membership in the association.

World production of honey reached 1,381 thousand tons in 2005. During this period the honey production in the EU reached 174 thousand tons, represented 12.6% of overall production. Other leading producers according to their production quota are China (22%), United States (6%), Argentina (6%) and Turkey (5%). Global consumption of honey has reached 1,345 thousand tons in 2005. The 25 EU represents approximately 24% of overall consumption, or 318 thousand tons, representing an average consumption of honey per capita in the EU25 of 0.8 kg.

USA- BEES TO WEST VIRGINIA BEEKEEPERS
A shipment of Italian bees delivered earlier this month couldn't come soon enough. 'Very helpful; it's a cost sharing program and bees are expensive,' said beekeeper Danny Plumly. The West Virginia Department of Agriculture Apiary Assistance Program is in the middle of a state wide hand out of nearly 10,000 pounds ( 4,200 kilograms) of bees - a number that will soon get considerably larger.
