In addition to an ongoing campaign by Häagen-Dazs, High Falls Brewing Co. of Rochester, N.Y., is championing the bee cause through its signature brew, Dundee Honey Brown Lager. 'We use 175,000 pounds of honey a year. Colony Collapse Disorder could certainly affect us,' said Patrick Magallanes, High Falls vice president of marketing. Under Dundee's 'Save the Honey Bee' program (www.dundeeforthebees.com), a portion of sales from every Dundee beer sold in the United States this year will be donated to the Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees. The company also is redesigning its packaging to include a bee on the Honey Brown's label and also is seeking to educate consumers about CCD with Web-based information and point-of-sale materials. Lip-balm maker Burt's Bees of Durham, N.C. (www.burtsbees.com), started this month to donate 5 percent of the proceeds from sales of its special edition CCD Beeswax Lip Balm to the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign and its Honeybee Health Improvement Project.
