CANADA- BEE ABSENCE COULD MEAN FOOD SHORTAGE
Over the past two winters, 2006-2008, bee losses across North America have ranged from 7 to 96 per cent of some colonies, according to recent surveys by the various beekeepers associations. The losses have been more severe in the U.S. than in Canada, but Canada has a growing demand for pollinators. The honey bee is the only efficient pollinator, and its numbers appear to be dwindling while the need for it keeps growing. Without bees, there is virtually no pollination. Without pollination, there's virtually no fruit. Paul Chantree, a beekeeper in Melancthon, has this take on the issue: 'We can get by without the honey. But we (can't remain healthy) without fruit. Without bees, you might get just a few tiny apples and pears.'
