GERMANY- BAYER WILL COMPENSATE BEEKEEPERS FOR DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE INSECTICIDE PONCHO
The chemical company Bayer CropScience compensate several hundred beekeepers with a total of two million euros for damage caused by the insecticide Poncho Pro to their hives of bees. According to the minister of Agriculture of Baden-Württemberg, Peter Hauck, those affected could reach an amicable settlement by the amount the company after acknowledging that the use of this insecticide in corn plantings had damaged about 11,500 hives and killed the bees.

CANADA- IN ONTARIO THE WORST BEES DEATH IN 28 YEARS
Glen Ackroyd is dealing with his most devastating losses in nearly three decades of beekeeping. The Tara-area farmer and owner of Ackroyd's Honey learned this spring that roughly 40 per cent of his honey bee colonies had died over the winter -- the worst death toll in 28 years. 'It's the highest losses I've ever had and almost the worst honey prices we've ever had, so it's been very stressful,' he said in an interview this week. Paul Kelly, a research apiarist at the University of Guelph, said the most current data pegs last winter's bee loss at 31 per cent of all colonies provincewide -- just four per cent lower than the much-publicized loss in 2007 which cost Ontario's commercial beekeepers more than C$5.2 million.
