ARGENTINA- HONEY EXPORTS JUNE 2008
6,938 tons were exported. (-2%) For a total of U.S.$ 18.73 million (+57%) at an average price of U.S.$ 2,701 per tonne (+ 60%). In the first six months of the year 38,823 tons were exported. (- 11%) for a total of U.S.$ 94.35 million (+ 38%) at an average price of U.S. $ 2,430 per tonne (+ 55%). All percentages compared with the same period last year.

AFGHANISTAN - TEACH LOCAL FAMILIES THE ART OF BEEKEEPING
Led by the French civil-military assistance team, with the collaboration of the French embassy and local representatives, the project?s aim was to provide the means to produce honey and to allow the families to financially support themselves. Two weeks ago, the local malek, or traditional chief, selected 15 families to attend 10 days of instruction with French embassy technicians. After 40 hours of training, students acquired the basic means to produce, extract and sell honey on their own.

NEW ZEALAND- VARROA BIO-CONTROL AGENT COULD BE AVAILABLE NEXT YEAR
Honey bee scientists from HortResearch have identified a fungus that kills varroa, but doesn't effect bees or the honey. Mark Goodwin from HortResearch, says until now the fungus has been an effective varroa control in lab tests, but it didn't work as well in the field. He says HortResearch is working with an international company to commercialise the product for the beekeeping industry to use.
