MEXICO- DIMINISH THE BEEHIVES QUANTITY IN JALISCO
The arrival of African bees to Jalisco, the sale of adulterated honey and deforestation have affected beekeeping, denounced producers of this sector, which like the industrialists of the milk have the same problem to get the funds approved by Congress of the Union last year. This has resulted in a considerable decrease in honey production, said Francisco Javier Trujillo and Gilberto Parra, both members of the Association of Beekeepers of Guadalajara. According to data from the Agricultural Information System Consulting (Siacon) from SAGARPA 2005, in the year 1994 inventory of 259 thousand hives was 983 and by 2005 had dropped to 154 with 229 thousand a decrease of 40.67 percent in this period, while the volume of honey production rose from 7 thousand 34 tons in 1994 to 5 thousand 334 tonnes in 2005, a 26.97 percent decline in that period.

USA- INTRODUCES THE FIRST FAIR TRADE CERTIFIED® ORGANIC HONEY
Wholesome Sweeteners, the nation's leader in Fair Trade Certified(TM) organic and natural sweeteners, has introduced the first-ever Fair Trade Certified Organic Honey in the U.S. market. The company also announced that its Fair Trade programs have netted more than $1 million in additional revenues for its Fair Trade Certified partners, supporting their efforts to earn a living wage. The honeys are collected traditionally by Mayan beekeepers in Chiapas and the Yucatan, Mexico. Wholesome pays a fair price directly to the beekeepers, who have formed vibrant worker-owned cooperatives which create meaningful employment, improve product quality, and send their children to school -- until now, an unaffordable luxury in the economically-depressed regions. Additionally, by protecting the hives and native plant forage areas, Fair Trade encourages biodiversity and helps the forests thrive.

A 15th nest was detected and destroyed this week in a container at a Portsmith business, the industrial suburb where Asian honey bees were first detected in May last year.
