NEW ZEALAND- HONEY TRADE WITH THE US THREATENED BY HONEY LAUNDERING
Beekeepers are warning the country's growing honey trade with the United States will suffer if Australian honey products are allowed into New Zealand. The National Beekeepers' Association of New Zealand (NBA) said tonight that Australian honey was being mixed with international honey and exported as an Australian product. "If Australian honey imports are allowed into New Zealand, New Zealand risks becoming a 'honey laundering' hub, a situation that would severely damage our honey exporters," NBA joint chief executive Gemma Collier said. New Zealand exports about $4 million worth of honey to the US in 2009. This is up from just under $2.5 million in 2008. "The US market is growing steadily, especially the manuka honey sector, and any risk to it is extremely concerning to the beekeeping industry," Ms Collier said. As a result of "honey laundering", Australia was now on a US watch list of 13 countries whose honey products must be checked carefully on entry, Ms Collier said.

USA- THE HONEYBEE MAY BE IN TROUBLE BUT THERE ARE A SOLUTION
A conservation biologist from California Lutheran University, Reese Halter is spreading the buzz about bees around the country and promoting his book, "The Incomparable Honeybee and the Economics of Pollination." In the last few years, U.S. beekeepers have experienced unprecedented die-offs of their bees, with some losing a quarter to a third of their hives, according to the Journal of Apicultural Research. While scientists have been unable to agree on a cause, Halter has his own theory. "There is no one smoking gun," Halter said. "It is a perfect storm, a collision of events that causes it." The way domestic bees are treated and large-scale pesticide use are the main culprits, Halter believes. Bees are typically fed sugar and high fructose corn solution instead of their natural diet, honey, he said. Solutions to the crisis do exist, Halter said. He suggests people should strive to buy only organic produce and never use pesticides or fungicides in their own gardens.

USA- BEEKEEPERS WORRIED ABOUT COLONY COLLAPSE DISORDER IN MICHIGAN
Beekeepers are buzzing about a disease that threatens the state's beekeeping industry: colony collapse disorder. It's known as CCD and is a scientific mystery where bees suddenly disappear from their hives, leaving beekeepers empty-handed. "In September and October, a beekeeper will have a lot of bees and by early December they're all gone," said Roger Hoopingarner, of Holt, president of the Michigan Beekeepers Association. "We don't know the cause."
