PALESTINIAN WOMEN BECOME BEEKEEPERS
A new beekeeping project launched by the East Hebron Area Development Programme (ADP) will allow 80 local women to establish their own business and help support their families. Eighty enthusiastic women joined the project. Each one paid US$150 amounting to about US$ 13,000 to which the ADP added US$ 50,000. The money was used to purchase 240 beehives, protective suites and hire an experienced agronomist who has a long experience in establishing beehives.

VARROA OUTBREAK PUTS NEW ZEALAND´S SOUTH ISLAND HONEY IN DANGER
Colonies of the bee-killing mite found in two apiaries near Stoke were confirmed in laboratory results yesterday. The outbreak has sunk hopes that the mite could be kept out of the South Island. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry officials are trying to find out the extent of the outbreak.

IN FLORIDA USA DETECTED PROHIBITED SUBSTANCE IN CHINAS´ HONEY
State investigators are threatening fines after finding trace amounts of antibiotics in honey imported from China. Four of the 14 Chinese samples showed levels of the substance 'fluoroquinolones,' ranging from 5 ppb, or parts per billion, to 93 ppb. Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Bronson has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which aided in the testing, to consider banning future imports if more testing shows positive results.
