IN USA - BEES , VITAL AS CROP POLLINATORS, PLAGUED BY MITES
“Last year I spent $3,800 on one round of treatment with mitacide,” said Edd Buchanan, a commercial beekeeper in Black Mountain. “It gets expensive quick to be in this business.” The increased mitacide costs translate to higher costs for farmers and eventually for consumers. More expensive bee pollination services do translate into more expensive food, although so far the increases have been relatively minor. Almonds, however, because they’re solely honeybee pollinated, have probably had the most dramatic price increase locally, going up 40 percent to 50 percent.
